How do people work? What is work worth? Are workers valuable assets or resources to be exploited? The answers to these questions are diverse and - throughout history - quite varied. The lecture will focus on the topic of how human labour has been realized, valued, protected or exploited since the beginnings of the globalized economy (which can be dated back to the 16th century). In addition to case studies such as early modern mining or the massive social upheavals in the course of "industrialization", the lecture will also address how, especially in Central and Western Europe, institutions have been increasingly founded since the 19th century that are intended to represent working people - the example of Austria can be used here to refer specifically to trade unions and the Chamber of Labour.
