In this course, we will look at selected examples of images and texts from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque period, including the following aspects: What are the similarities between images of the Virgin Mary and the poetry of the Middle Ages that emerged at the same time? What are the various links between Lucas Cranach's Altarpiece of the Holy Kinship and Martin Luther's translation of the New Testament? And what is the connection between Georg Flegel's still life and the idea of vanitas in Baroque literature? A second part of the course covers works from the Rococo to Classicism and Romanticism.
